Four African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to University Administrative Posts

Tierney Bates was appointed vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, effective July 1. Dr. Bates most recently served as assistant vice chancellor for special projects and interim executive director for university career services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Earliier, he was vice president for enrollment management and student affairs at Virginia Union University.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Bates earned a bachelor’s degree in mass media communications with a minor in African American history and a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Akron. He holds an MBA from Bryan College in Tennessee and a Ph.D. from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky.

Kawanna Leggett will be the next senior vice president for student affairs at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Most recently, she served as associate vice chancellor of student affairs at Washington University in St. Louis. Earlier, Dr. Leggett served as the director of residential education at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Leggett is a graduate of Clemson University in South Carolina, where she majored in political science. She earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Arkansas and an educational doctorate from the University of Missouri, St. Louis.

Michael Smith was named interim athletic director at Florida A&M University. Smith, who previously served as interim atheltic director, is currently interim assistant vice president for finance and administration, and business and auxiliary services. He has been on the staff at the universty for 25 years.

Smith is a graduate of Florida A&M University, where he majored in accounting and played football.

Eric Holmes was named campus chief of police and director of public safety at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, effective May 23. He has been a commander and chief of staff for the Pittsburgh Police Department.

Holmes is a graduate of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in communication and media studies. He holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.
