A Trio of Black Scholars Who Have Been Given New Roles at Major Universities

Jonathan Bailey Holland will join Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as the Jack G. Buncher Chair and new head of the School of Music beginning August 1. Most recently, Dr. Holland served as chair of composition, contemporary music, and core studies at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, a position he has held since 2016 in addition to serving as professor of composition. He first joined Berklee College of Music in 2000 as an assistant professor of composition.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in composition from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Dr. Holland received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Deidre W. Evans, an associate professor in the department of computer science at Florida A&M University, was given the added duties as head of the Honors Program at the university. Dr. Evans joined the faculty at the university in 1994.

A graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, Dr. Evans holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Gwendolyn Scott-Jones of Delaware State University was recently selected to hold the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Distinguished Professor Endowed Chair. She is dean of the university’s Wesley College of Health & Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Scott-Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master of social work degree from Delaware State University. She earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The Universities That Awarded the Most Doctorates to African Americans From 2019 to 2023

Walden University, headquartered in Minneapolis but conducts most of its business online, awarded 1,536 doctorates to African Americans during the five-year period. This was 12 percent of all doctorates awarded to Black Americans during the five-year period. The only other universities awarding more than 200 doctorates to African Americans were two historically Black educational institutions, Howard University and Jackson State University.
