In Memoriam: Arnold Euriel George, 1952-2022

Arnold George, an assistant professor in the department of music at North Carolina Central University, died at the Duke University Medical Center on May 18. He was 69 years old.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, George moved to North Carolina as a young boy to live with a relative. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education at North Carolina Central University in 1975. Arnold obtained a teaching position at Woodington High School in near Kinston, North Carolina, and taught band in the Durham Public School system. He completed his master’s degree in music education at the University of Miami.

George joined NCCU in 1991 as an instructor and served the university and music department for 31 years, where he played an instrumental role in building the Jazz Studies Program. His primary instrument was the alto saxophone but he also was an excellent pianist.
