Five Universities Have Appointed Black Scholars to Diversity Positions

Darryl C. Mace was appointed the inaugural vice president for mission, diversity, and inclusion at Alvernia College in Reading, Pennsylvania. Before arriving at Alvernia, Dr. Mace was a tenured professor at Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania. He also served as the chief diversity and inclusion officer for Cabrini’s academic affairs division.

Dr. Mace earned bachelor’s degrees in history and speech communication from Pennsylvania State University. He holds a Ph.D. in African American history from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Dominique A. Quarles will be the next associate vice president for inclusive excellence and chief diversity officer at Georgia Southern University, effective August 1. Dr. Quarles has been serving as assistant vice president for access, diversity, and inclusion at Mississippi State University.

Dr. Quarles holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in higher education from Georgia Southern University. He earned a Ph.D. in higher education at the University of Georgia.

Lydia Contreras is the new vice provost for faculty diversity, equity, and inclusivity at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Contreras, who holds the Jim and Barbara Miller Endowed Faculty Fellowship in Chemical Engineering, has served for the past two years as the managing director of diversity in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. She joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 2011.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Contreras earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University. She holds a Ph.D. in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Cornell University.

Myron Burr is the new coordinator of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. He was a diversity officer at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.

Burr is a graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he played football. He earned a master’s degree at Lindenwood University.

Lakesha Butler has been appointed associate vice president for inclusion, diversity, and health equity and chief diversity officer for University of Florida Health. She starts her new job on August 22. She has been serving as a professor of pharmacy practice and director of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Dr. Butler holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a pharmacy doctorate from Mercer University in Georgia.
