Three African Americans Who Have Been Name Chief Diversity Officers at Universities

André L. Churchwell was appointed vice chancellor of outreach, inclusion, and belonging and chief diversity officer at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Dr. Churchwell is the inaugural Levi Watkins, Jr., M.D. Chair and previously served as the chief diversity officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a professor of cardiology, professor of radiology and radiological aciences, and professor of biomedical engineering.

Dr. Churchwell is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he majored in biomedical engineering. He earned his medical degree at Harvard University.

Tiffany R. Hinton is the new assistant vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. Dr. Hinton has been at ECSU since 2018, having previously served as director of community standards prior to being promoted to assistant dean of student development.

Dr. Hinton is a graduate of Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, where she majored in criminal justice. She holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Norfolk State University in Virginia and an educational doctorate from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

Kiwana McClung has been named the chief diversity officer at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. McClung, who joined the university in 2013, is an associate professor in the School of Architecture and Design.

McClung, who is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana., earned a bachelor’s degree in arts and humanities from Southern University in Baton Rouge. She holds a master of architecture degree from Louisiana State University.
