Eight African Americans in New Administrative Positions in Higher Education

Karlene Burrell-McRae is the new director of the Black Cultural Center at Swarthmore College in suburban Philadelphia. She was the director of the Black Cultural Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Burrell-McRae is a graduate of Colby College. She holds two master’s degrees and an educational doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.

Youlonda Copeland-Morgan was named vice chancellor of enrollment management at the University of California at Los Angeles.  Since 2008, she has been associate vice president for enrollment management at Syracuse University. Previously, she held admissions and financial aid positions at Harvey Mudd College, Occidental College, and the University of La Verne.

A graduate of Loyola Marymount University, Copeland-Morgan holds an MBA from the University of La Verne.

Nina S. Driver was named program manager at the Institute on Race and Ethnicity at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Driver has served in the Peace Corps.

Driver recently completed her master’s degree in international business at the Grenoble Ecole de Management in France. She is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame.

Tony Myers was named associate director of admissions for the transfer central office at the University of Arkansas.

A graduate of Barton Community College and Southwestern College in Kansas, Myers holds an MBA and is currently pursuing a doctorate in higher education at the University of Arkansas.

Bertrand G. Frank Haynes was appointed executive director of TRIO/Ronald E. McNair programs at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. He is the president of Haynes Institute of Cultural Competency, a consulting firm.

Dr. Haynes is a graduate of Lander University. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in organizational leadership from Clemson University.

Francene L. Botts-Butler was named director of the Office of Equity/Diversity at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She was the director of multicultural student services at Morehead State University in Kentucky.

Botts-Butler is a graduate of Kentucky State University and the University of Kentucky School of Law. She also holds a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University.

Karen E. Kerr was named senior director of new ventures and alliances at the Stevens Institute for Innovation at the University of Southern California. She was director of business development and targeted acquisitions for Intellectual Ventures Invention Development Fund.

A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Dr. Kerr holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Chicago.

Navie I. Lloyd was appointed director of alumni affairs at Mississippi Valley State University. Lloyd has been an educator for more than 30 years.

She is a 1970 graduate of Mississippi Valley State University.

In Memoriam: William Strickland, 1937-2024

Strickland spent his lifetime dedicated to advancing civil rights and Black political representation. For four decades, he served as a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he taught courses on Black history and the civil rights movement.
