New Administrative Position for Four African Americans at State Universities

Shawn Turner has been named general manager of WKAR Public Media at Michigan State University. He is a professor of practice in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at the university. He has been on-air analyst at CNN since 2018. Earlier, Turner was a deputy White House press secretary for national security.

A member of the U.S. Marines for 21 years, Turner received a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Texas State University. He holds a master’s degree in communication from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Stephanie Hawkes has been named the senior director of the Office of Multicultural Student Engagement at Wayne State University in Detroit. Dr. Hawkes, who had served in the role on an interim basis, has been on the university’s staff for six years. Prior to joining Wayne State, Dr. Hawkes worked with Eastern Michigan University’s Upward Bound Program and the Purdue Promise scholarship program at Purdue University.

Dr. Hawkes earned a bachelor’s degree in language, literature, and writing for secondary education and a master’s degree in higher education student affairs from Eastern Michigan University. She completed her doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies at Wayne State University.

Larry D. Terry II has been selected as the vice president for outreach at Pennsylvania State University, effective January 23. He has been serving as executive director of the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service and professor at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. Earlier, Dr. Terry was the founding director of the SERCH (Service, Education and Research for Communities with Hope) Institute at the University of North Texas.

Dr. Terry holds a bachelor’s degree in Black studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned a master’s degree in public administration from San Diego State University and a doctorate in public affairs from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Ashley Holloway has been named associate vice president for marketing and communication at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. She was the director of marketing for the Office of Online Learning at the University of Georgia. Earlier, she was executive director of marketing for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Holloway holds a bachelor’s degree in worship and music and an MBA from Liberty University.
