Five African Americans Who Are Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

Rico Munn was named chief of staff to the president of Colorado State University, effective July 1. Since 2013, he has served as superintendent of the public school systems in Aurora, Colorado. Munn is the former executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education and of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies.

Munn is a graduate of Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska. He earned a juris doctorate from the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver.

Monika Williams Shealey, senior vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Rowan University in New Jersey, has been named chair of the board of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Dr. Shealey joined Rowan University in 2013 as the first African American dean of the College of Education. Her research has focused on examining the experiences of minoritized groups in special education and Black women in teacher education and leadership.

Dr. Shealey received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of South Florida. She holds a Ph.D. in education from the University of Central Florida.

Renarde D. Earl was named vice president of public safety and chief of police at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. He was associate vice chancellor for police/public safety and chief of police at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. Earlier, Earl was chief/director of campus police and public safety at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for nearly 15 years.

Earl is a graduate of North Carolina Central University, where he majored in criminal justice.

Natasha Hutson has been appointed to serve as chief of staff to the president of Alcorn State University in Mississippi. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Hutson served as the assistant vice president for student development and dean of students at the university.

A native of Atlanta, Dr. Hudson holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. She earned a master of public administration degree from Florida State University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Valdosta State University in Georgia.

Misty Nunn is the new executive director of university and alumni relations at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. Since 2021, she has been the chief of staff at the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. Earlier, she was the director of marketing and university relations at Lincoln University, a position she held for nearly 17 years.

Nunn is a graduate of Lincoln University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
