A Trio of Black Scholars in New Faculty Positions

William T. Brooks has been named the director of bands and an assistant professor of music at Albany State University in Georgia. He was the assistant director of bands and an assistant professor of music at Kentucky State University.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Brooks earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Middle Tennessee State University. He completed a master’s degree in music education at the University of Memphis and is working toward a doctor of music education degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Ericmoore Jossou will be joining the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this summer as an assistant professor in a shared position between the departments of nuclear science and engineering and electrical engineering and computer science. He is currently an assistant scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, a U.S. Department of Energy-affiliated lab which conducts research in nuclear and high-energy physics, energy science and technology, environmental and bioscience, nanoscience, and national security.

Dr. Jossou earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Niegria. He holds a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from the African University of Science and Technology in Abuja, Nigeria, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering with a specialization in materials science from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

Joan Blakey is the new director of the University of Minnesota School of Social Work. An associate professor, her research is focused on child advocacy, protection, and welfare; diversity, equity, and inclusion; justice and corrections; substance use and substance use treatment; and trauma and trauma-informed care.

Dr. Blakey holds a bachelor’s degree and a master of social work degree from the University of Minnesota. She earned a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Chicago.
