Five African Americans Taking on New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

Evan Williams has been named the director of the Paul Robeson Cultural Center at Pennsylvania State University. He was the inaugural assistant director of student diversity, equity, and inclusion in student affairs at Penn State Harrisburg. Prior to his role at the Harrisburg campus, Williams worked in residence life at both the University Park and Greater Allegheny campuses of Pennsylvania State University.

Williams earned a bachelor of arts in communication studies and a master of arts in counseling with a student affairs focus at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Jacari Henderson is the new director of Saluki Cares, the campuswide student support and care effort at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She has been serving as the interim assistant athletic director for compliance at the university and had previously served as the director of compliance and compliance coordinator.

Henderson earned her bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in criminology and criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Carlane Pittman-Hampton has been named chief of staff to the president of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She has been serving as assistant dean of residential MBA programs at the university’s Raymond A. Mason School of Business. Dr. Pittman-Hampton has been at William & Mary for more than two decades, starting as a graduate assistant in the School of Education. She will start her new role on July 17.

Dr. Pittman-Hampton holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from Spelman College in Atlanta. She earned a master’s degree in education from Hampton University in Virginia and a Ph.D. in educational policy, planning, and leadership from the College of William and Mary.

Jeanine A. Irons was appointed director of institutional culture and employee experience for Syracuse University Libraries in New York. She has served as a faculty developer for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Syracuse University’s Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. Earlier, she was an instructional designer and educational developer at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

Dr. Irons holds bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Alabama.

Alexis J. McLean was named vice president for student affairs at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York. She has been serving as the dean of students at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. She has been on the staff there for 14 years.

Dr. McLean earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pennsylvania State University. She holds a master’s degree in mental health and wellness counseling and a doctorate in higher education administration, both from New York University.
