Three African Americans Taking on New Diversity-Related Roles in Higher Education

Nicholas M. Creary will be the inaugural institutional justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion officer at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Vermont. He has served as associate provost for academic inclusion and innovation and associate professor of history at Moravian University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and as associate director of the Center for Diversity and Enrichment at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Creary is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he majored in history and African studies. He holds a master’s degree in U.S. history from the Catholic University of America, a master’s degree in higher education administration from Morgan State University in Baltimore, and a Ph.D. in African history from Michigan State University.

Nicole Del Castillo was named chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, effective August 16. She has been serving as the director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and as a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Del Castillo received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois. She earned a medical doctorate from the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Dr. Del Castillo also holds a master of public health degree from Harvard University.

Marc Reed was named vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion and chief diversity and inclusion officer at Grinnell College in Iowa. He has served in the post on an interim basis since September. Earlier, he was associate chief diversity officer for staff equity.

A graduate of the University of Phoenix, Reed holds a master’s degree in management with a concentration in organizational diversity and inclusion leadership from the University of Dubuque in Iowa.
