Two African American Women Named to Provost Positions

Cynthia Hester was named interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, Texas. She has been serving as assistant vice president for academic affairs. Before coming to Jarvis Christian University, Dr. Hester served as assistant vice president for academic affairs, dean of the School of Business and Social Sciences, assistant professor, and interim vice president for academic affairs at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Earlier in her career, she spent 20 years at Grambling State University in Louisiana serving in several roles including special assistant to the president, interim vice president of finance, and director of career services.

Dr. Hester is a graduate of Grambling State University where she majored in accounting. She holds an MBA from Louisiana Tech University and a doctorate in higher education administration from Grambling State University,

Rhonda Porter, who has served as associate provost since 2021 – was promoted to interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Albany State University in Georgia. Initially starting as a faculty member, her 17-year tenure at Albany State has focused on academic excellence and student success. She has also served as dean, associate dean, department chair, and assessment director.

Dr. Porter holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University. She earned a master’s degree from Columbus State University in Georgia and a master’s degree and a doctorate in mathematics education from Auburn University.
