Three African American Scholars Appointed to Dean Positions at Universities

Corey D. B. Walker has been named dean of the Wake Forest University School of Divinity. Dr. Walker, who is a professor of the humanities at the university, has served as interim dean for the school since January. Before joining the faculty at Wake Forest University in 2020, Dr. Walker was dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond. Previously, he was the John W. and Anna Hodgin Hanes Professor of the Humanities and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. Dr. Walker is the former chair of the department of Africana studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Professor Walker is a graduate of Norfolk State University in Virginia. He holds master’s degrees from Harvard University, Brown University, and Virginia Union University. Professor Walker earned a Ph.D. at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Crystal Shannon has been named dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Indiana University Northwest in Gary. She is an associate professor of nursing at the university. Dr. Shannon began at IU Northwest in 2007 as a lecturer in the School of Nursing and since has held increasingly responsible faculty and academic administration appointments. From 2017 to 2021, she served as the associate director of graduate programs in the School of Nursing.

Dr. Shannon holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from National Louis University in Chicago. She holds a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix, an MBA from Indiana University Northwest, and a Ph.D. in public health education and promotion from Walden University.

Colvin T. Georges Jr. was appointed dean of students for the Albert A. Sheen campus of the University of the Virgin Islands. Dr. Georges worked at Chatham University in Pittsburgh as the assistant dean of students for student success and engagement. He also held positions at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign and the New York Institute of Technology.

Dr. Georges is a graduate of Florida State University. He holds a master’s degree in education from New York University, an MBA from the New York Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in education policy, organization, and leadership from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
