Bowie State University in Maryland has launched a new energy conservation and awareness campaign in an effort to encourage students, faculty, and staff to reduce energy consumption and therefore reduce costs for the university. The awareness campaign was made possible through a grant by the Verizon Foundation.

Under the program, the university will seek to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications for new construction on campus. A climate commitment website will be set up to engage the campus and the surrounding community to support energy conservation efforts. The university will promote alternative energy-saving transportation alternatives and will implement new energy-saving technologies.
