North Carolina Central University Says No to New Center Funded by Conservative Foundation

A plan to fund a center on constitutional law at historically black North Carolina Central University was withdrawn when some faculty and alumni voiced concern that the funding for the center was coming from a conservative group. The center was to be established with $600,000 in start-up funds from the John William Pope Foundation.

Over the years, the foundation has contributed millions of dollars to conservative causes. It is run by Art Pope, a former state legislator and CEO of  Vareity Wholesalers. The Raleigh News and Observer called him the “Knight of the Right.”

Here is a profile of Pope in a recent edition of The New Yorker.
