Austin Agho to Transition from Old Dominion University Provost to Chief Integration Officer

Austin Agho, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, will transition to a new role as senior advisor to the president and chief integration officer beginning July 1. In this role, Dr. Agho will oversee the university’s merger with Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Dr. Agho’s career in higher education spans more than three decades. In 1989, he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois Springfield as an assistant professor. He then transitioned to Florida A&M University in 1992 where he served as professor and director of the health care management program. From there, he served as dean of the School of Health Professions and Studies at the University of Michigan Flint for seven years and later as dean of the Indiana University School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences for eight years.

In 2016, Dr. Agho assumed his current role as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Old Dominion University. Throughout his tenure, the university has seen significant growth, earning the designation as an R1 research institution and expanding  degree offerings. Dr. Agho’s tenure has also included a focus on increasing diversity among the university’s faculty and staff. Under his leadership, the departments of biology and mechanical and aerospace engineering hired their first women faculty members with the rank of full professor.

Dr. Agho’s new position as chief integration officer will be in place for at least two years. He will have a particular focus on combining the two institutions’ academics, finance, human resources, information technology, and operations departments.

Dr. Agho is a graduate of Alaska Pacific University where he received his bachelor’s degree in management science. He holds a master’s degree in health care administration and management from Governors State University, and a Ph.D. in health and hospital administration from the University of Iowa.
