Betty Stewart Appointed Executive Vice President and Provost of Hampton University

Betty H. Stewart has been appointed executive vice president and provost of Hampton University, a historically Black university in Virginia. She will take on the university’s chief academic post on July 1.

With over three decades of higher education experience, Dr. Stewart has been serving as provost of the University of North Texas at Dallas. One of her most notable accomplishments as provost was securing $100 million in funding to construct a building dedicated to minority students in STEM.

As an academic, Dr. Stewart has conducted extensive research in the biochemistry field. She has held tenured professorships with the University of North Texas at Dallas, Austin College, and Midwestern State University, which named a lab after her in honor of her numerous scholarly contributions. She also previously served as a fellow at the University of Texas Medical School.

“I hope to cultivate a culture of care and support within our university community, advocating for the success and happiness of students, faculty, and staff alike,” said Dr. Stewart. “Whether it’s supporting faculty in their scholarly pursuits or assisting staff in their professional growth, my goal is to collaborate with our team to propel the university forward.”

Dr. Stewart holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Mississippi State University and a Ph.D. in protein biochemistry and biological sciences from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
