Tennessee State University Appoints Two Black Men to Key Administrative Positions

Daarel Burnette has been selected to serve as senior advisor and interim executive vice president. A retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force, he has served as a financial advisor to several HBCUs, including Jackson State University in Mississippi and Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina.

Dr. Burnette is a two-time HBCU graduate, having earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Morehouse College in Atlanta and his Ph.D. in leadership in urban higher education from Jackson State University. He also holds an MBA from Georgia State University.

Darryl Thompson has been named special advisor to the president for external affairs, infrastructure, and major projects. He brings over 30 years of experience to his new role, previously serving as the associate vice president for institutional advancement at historically Black Kentucky State University.

Thompson is an alumnus of Kentucky State University, where he majored in English language and literature.
