Virginia State University Launches First-Ever HBCU Studies Course

Virginia State University has launched a first-of-its-kind course in HBCU studies. Housed in the university’s department of family and consumer sciences, the class will be taught by Dr. Jada Brooks, professor and interim department chair.

Currently, Virginia State offers a course on the history of HBCUs. The new course, “FACS 425: The HBCU Family,” will explore factors related to the family experience at HBCUs, such as the familial atmosphere at historically Black institutions, multigenerational college attendance, and the institutions’ broader influence on Black family life.

“We are thrilled to introduce the world’s first HBCU studies course in family and consumer sciences,” said Dr. Brooks. “This course will allow students to explore the HBCU experience through a curricular lens. At VSU, we are always striving for greater, and this new academic offering reflects our commitment to being a preeminent HBCU.”

The new course in HBCU studies is available for enrollment in the upcoming fall 2025 semester.

  1. This sounds like a very promising course for the entire HBCU community. As such, I would like to know where can those affiliated with HBCUs secure copy of the syllabi being used?
