The Latest Update on Black In-State First-Year Students Admitted to the University of California System

The University of California System has recently released preliminary data on in-state students admitted to the Class of 2029 at its nine undergraduate campuses throughout the state.

In total, 100,947 students from California were accepted for admission at a University of California System undergraduate campus for the fall 2025 semester. Of these students, 5,938 were Black, equating to 5.9 percent of all in-state admitted students. At the system’s flagship Berkeley campus, 504 Black students from California were admitted for the fall 2025 semester, representing 5.1 percent of all admitted first-year Californians.

The top campuses for Black student representation among in-state admitted students were Los Angeles (7.1 percent), Merced (6.3 percent), and Riverside (5.9 percent). Black students are less than 5 percent of in-state admitted students at the Irvine (4.7 percent) and Santa Cruz (4.3 percent) campuses and less than 4 percent of in-state admitted students at the San Diego (3.9 percent) and Santa Barbara (3.4 percent) campuses.
