The Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina teamed up with 74 African Methodist Episcopal churches to promote healthier lifestyles among church members. Also participating in the project were researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina, Allen University, and Clemson University. The five-year project was funded with a $3.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.
About 1,250 church members participated in the Faith, Activity, and Nutrition program. The education program trained church members to lead programs to promote increased physical activity and better eating habits.
The results showed the members of churches that participated in the training program were more likely to exercise and eat more fruits and vegetables than members of churches who did not receive the training.
