The Department of Human Development & Psychoeducational Studies at Howard University, in Washington DC, seeks student-oriented applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position in the traditional in-person Human Development Program at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, beginning August 15, 2026. We seek a dynamic and enthusiastic scholar whose teaching, research, and service align with the mission of the University and the School of Education. The Human Development program is housed in the Department of Human Development and Psychoeducational Studies (HDPES) within the Howard University School of Education.
Department of Human Development and Psychoeducational Studies: The mission of the Department of Human Development and Psychoeducational Studies (HDPES) is to address the human development, educational, and psychological needs of a multicultural society. Human Development Program: The BS in human development is ecologically oriented and focuses on individuals and families from a multidisciplinary perspective. The program’s major focus is on developmental processes throughout the life cycle and on interpersonal relationships within the family and other human/environmental settings, with special reference to African American and underserved populations. The program offers an Honors Program that provides students with the opportunity to enhance their research skills, as well as a 5-year accelerated dual-degree program leading to a BS and an MSW in Human Development. There is also an online degree completion program that is a pathway to earning a bachelor’s degree. It is designed for degree seekers who have earned at least 60 credit hours from any American university.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in human development across the lifespan from an asset-based perspective (e.g., infancy, early childhood, and adolescent development, family relationships)
- Develop and maintain an active, externally fundable research agenda
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences
- Teach and work in an in-person (on-campus) environment
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
- Engage in department, college, and university service
- Contribute to community-engaged scholarship and outreach consistent with the mission of the University
Required Qualifications
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D., PsyD., or Ed.D.) in Human Development, Developmental Psychology, Child & Family Studies, or another closely related field
- Demonstrated evidence of potential for effectiveness in teaching and communication at the college level
- Demonstrated commitment to research and scholarly productivity
- Commitment to working with diverse student populations and communities
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching and research experience at the university level
- Research interests that align with the mission of the department, School, and the University
- Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate or graduate students
- Experience teaching online or hybrid courses
- Track record in securing external funding
Salary Range: $83,000-$87,000
Rank, Salary, and Support
