How Do Professional Schools at HBCUs Fare in *U.S. News* Rankings?

U.S. News and World Report recently released its annual rankings of the best graduate and professional schools. Some of the graduate and professional schools at historically Black colleges and universities were included in the rankings, but in all cases, they were far down the list of the best schools and programs.

Stanford Law School was rated as the best in the United States. The University of Chicago and Yale University tied for second. Of the six law schools at historically Black universities, Howard University was ranked highest in the 117th position. Florida A&M University, Southern University, the University of the District of Columbia, North Carolina Central University, and Texas Southern University, all ranked at the bottom, are listed among the 175th-to-194th best law schools.

The rankings for medical schools are done in tiers, not ranked by numbers. The College of Medicine at Howard University was ranked in the second tier of medical schools in the primary care category and in the third tier in the research category. Meharry Medical College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science were not included in the rankings of the best medical schools in either primary care or research.
