New Auction Website Seeks to Raise Money for HBCUs

Figure-3.0_Star-Bright-Donations-Icon_Star-OnlyA new online auction website is raising money for historically Black colleges and universities. Earlier this month, Star Bright Donations began auctioning celebrity memorabilia on its website with at least 70 percent of the winning bid price being donated to a HBCU.

Here’s how it works. Celebrities from sports and entertainment donate personal items such as jewelry, clothing, or equipment to Star Bright Donations. The items are then put up for bid and sold at auction. The celebrity who donated the item can designate which HBCU will receive the proceeds or he or she can choose to allow the winning bidder to select which HBCUs receives the donation.

When JBHE visited the site recently, items up for bid included jerseys and helmets worn by professional football players, boxing equipment, a signed skateboard, autographed photographs, and equipment used by professional DJs.
