Jackson State University to Produce an e-Book on Medgar Evers and Margaret Walker

jsuJackson State University in Mississippi is producing an e-book in conjunction with the University Press of Mississippi on the friendship of civil rights leader Medgar Evers and author Margaret Walker Alexander. Evers was the field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi when he was gunned down in his driveway in 1963. Walker was a professor of English at Jackson State and founder of the Institue for the Study of History, Life and Culture of Black People. Walker and Evers were family friends and they lived a block from each other.

BlaineThe project is the brainchild of Robert Blaine, associate professor of music and director of orchestral studies at Jackson State University in Mississippi. He is also one of the organizers of the university’s iPad Advantage Initiative which gives incoming students Apple iPads to use while in college. If a student stays in school for five semesters, the iPad is their’s to keep. Dr. Blaine will handle the technology aspects of the e-book creating links in the text to photos, videos, audio clips, and documents that are included in the archives of the university’s Margaret Walker Center
