Governor Jerry Brown Vetoes California Affirmative Action Measure

Governor Jerry Brown of California has vetoed a controversial measure that would have allowed state-operated colleges and universities to consider race in their admissions decisions. In a statement, Governor Brown said that he agreed with goals of the bill. However, he said the bill contradicted Proposition 209, a 1996 referendum approved by voters, that banned the use of race in admissions decisions.

“Signing this bill is unlikely to impact how Proposition 209 is ultimately interpreted by the courts,” Brown wrote. “It will just encourage the 209 advocates to file more costly and confusing lawsuits.”
