This week 30 students from Southern Methodist University in Dallas are taking part in the university’s ninth annual Civil Rights Pilgrimage. The students will travel by bus to visit many of the most famous locations of the civil rights movement.
Students will visit Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, the home of Medgar Evers, and the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham where four young African American girls were killed by a bomber. The students will also march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, in a reenactment of the Bloody Sunday voting rights march. The trip will also include visits to the campus of the University of Mississippi, Tuskegee University, and the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination.
