The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport in the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, recently released its annual report card on race in college sports for the 2011-12 academic year. The institute assigned an overall grade of B on race, the same grade as a year ago.
Here are some of the highlights of the report:
• There were no African Americans among the 30 conference commissioners in the NCAA’s Division I.
• There were 20 African Americans serving as athletic directors at the 319 Division I schools. Thus, Blacks were 6.3 percent of all athletic directors in Division I.
• Blacks made up 16.2 percent of all male student athletes and 8.6 percent of all women student athletes at NCAA schools.
• Blacks were 8.2 percent of all head coaches of men’s teams and 7.8 percent of all head coaches of women’s teams at Division I schools.
• In assistant coaching positions, Blacks were far more represented. For men’s teams in Division I, Blacks held 18.2 percent of the assistant coaching posts. For women’s teams, Blacks were 14.1 percent of the assistant coaches.
