Cecil L. “Pat” Patterson, former vice chancellor for academic affairs at North Carolina Central University in Durham, died earlier this month. He was 96 years old.
Holding master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Patterson joined the faculty at what is now North Carolina Central University in 1950 as an assistant professor of English. He rose through the ranks to full professor and also served as dean of the Undergraduate School and director of the Honors College.
Dr. Patterson retired in 1986 after 36 years on the university’s faculty. He was granted the title of professor emeritus and was awarded an honorary degree from the university in 1988.
Well done good and faithful servant. May you now rest in peace from your labor in the vineyard. We thank you for your life of service to God and to humankind.
I still miss you visiting and taking pictures of the family. Rest in love Uncle Cecil.
A fine Christian gentleman and scholar. Gave back by training young men to serve in the church. Well groomed, discipled, even tempered, orderly and focused on what was most important. Excelled in everything he did. Quiet achiever and had a heart for the disadvantaged.
Taught Christian Principal’s thru service and example.
