Hillsdale College President Criticized for Using the Term “Dark Ones”

Hillsdale_College_sealLarry Arnn, the president of Hillsdale College in Michigan, came under fire for a remark he made at a legislative hearing in Lansing on the adoption of Common Core State Standard. President Arnn noted that state officials had earlier criticized Hillsdale College for not having enough “dark ones.”

Hillsdale College does not accept any federal funds and therefore is not required to furnish enrollment data by race to the federal government. President Arnn stated that in 2000 Michigan officials sent people to campus with instructions to note the skin color of students who passed by. “What were they looking for besides dark ones?” Arnn asked.
