South African Scholar Is the First International Winner of the Spendlove Prize

JANSENJonathan D. Jansen, vice chancellor and rector of the University of the Free State and the first Black dean at a South African university, was named the recipient of the 2013 Alice and Clifford Spendlove Prize in Social Justice, Diplomacy and Tolerance. The prize is awarded by the University of California at Merced and will be presented at a campus ceremony on October 28.

The prize was made possible by a gift from Sherrie Spendlove in honor of her parents who were long-time residents of Merced. He is the first non-American to win the award. Previous winners have included Charles Ogletree and Jimmy Carter.

Dr. Jansen is the author of the book Knowledge in the Blood: Confronting Race and the Apartheid Past (Stanford University Press, 2009). Dr. Jansen holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
