Last month, North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro announced that it was ending its intercollegiate women’s swim team. The team is being phased out between now and 2015. According to Swimming World magazine, the North Carolina A&T University swim team is the only women’s team still in existence at a historically Black college or university.
Howard University in Washington, D.C. has a men’s swimming team. When the North Carolina A&T team is phased out, the Howard program will be the only intercollegiate swim team at a HBCU. Florida A&M University in Tallahassee had both a men’s and women’s swim team, but they were discontinued in 2011.
An online petition to save the swim program at North Carolina A&T has been established at Change.org. As of this writing, 1,628 people had signed the petition to save the team. The petition can be seen here.
PLEASE SAVE A&T’S WOMEN SWIM TEAM.
SO, MY DAUGHTER WHO IS A COMPETITIVE SWIMMER CANNOT ATTEND A HBCU
I was upset to hear about the female team but I am especially upset to hear about the men’s team at North Carolina A&T is no longer! The young men at NC A &T should have the same opportunities that the young women have! I’m glad to know that the women’s swim team remains intact but the men’s team to come back!
I am a diver. Black girls swim and dive too. I want to attend a HBCU. SAVE THE PROGRAM 2017.
Black girls swim!!! Please keep the swim team at North Carolina A&T. My daughter is a great competitive swimmer and would like to attend an HBCU. #2017
