Checking Up on Black Enrollments at Louisiana State University

lsulogoLouisiana State University in Baton Rouge has released new data on student enrollments for the Fall 2013 semester. There are nearly 25,000 undergraduate students on campus this fall and this total includes 2,774 Black students. Thus, Blacks make up 11.1 percent of all undergraduates. Of the Black undergraduates, 1,710 are women and 1,064 are men. Therefore, women make up 61.6 percent of all Black enrollments. Blacks are 32.4 percent of the Louisiana population so the Black undergraduate student population at Louisiana State University is about one third the percentage of Blacks in the state’s population.

There are 4,806 graduate students on the Baton Rouge campus this fall. This total includes 425 Black students. Thus, Blacks are 8.8 percent of all graduate enrollments. Women make up two thirds of all Black enrollments. Blacks make up 3.4 percent of the graduate engineering students and 1.7 percent of the enrollments in veterinary medicine.

  1. Although the percentage of Black students at LSU is disappointing, one has to observe that Louisiana operates a historically black college system that attracts Black students from Louisiana.
