Record Black First-Year Enrollments at the University of Kentucky

kentuckyThe University of Kentucky has reported that its has a record number of students in its first-year class. The total enrollment of 29,400 students is also a record.

There are 555 African American first-year students on campus this fall. That, also, is a university record. Blacks make up a whopping 11.8 percent of the entering class. This percentage is particularly impressive given the fact that Blacks are just 8 percent of the state’s population.

Eli Capilouto, president of the University of Kentucky, stated, “Our dedicated enrollment management team deserves special recognition for the sustained and tireless efforts to recruit and nurture these students. Of course, much work remains. Recruitment is only part of the equation. We must work to retain and graduate them, to prepare them successfully for a world in which they must invent or reinvent their jobs.”
