This Week’s Roundup of New Higher Education Administrative Appointments

GibsonJacqueline Gibson was appointed vice president of student affairs at Mississippi Valley State University. She was assistant vice president for student engagement and leadership development at Kentucky State University. She previously served as dean of students at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Gibson is a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University. She holds a master’s degree in communication and an educational doctorate from the University of Akron in Ohio.

Gipson picMaurice D. Gipson was named assistant director for constituent relations and events in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. He has served as director of the annual fund at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, and director of development for Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas.

Gipson is a graduate of Louisiana State University and the Southern University Law Center. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational policy.

earl-johnsonEarl Johnson is the new vice president for enrollment management and student services at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. He has served in the post on an interim basis since June and previously was the dean of admission.

Johnson is a graduate of the University of Tulsa, where he earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in commercial art and played varsity football. He holds a master’s degree in higher education administration from Oklahoma State University.

JacksonCoreenCoreen Jackson, director of the honors program at Tennessee State University in Nashville, has been elected vice president of the National Association of African American Honors Programs. She will serve one year as vice president, one year as president-elect, and then will become president.

Dr. Jackson is a native of Jamaica. She is a graduate of William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. Dr. Jackson earned a master’s degree at Brooklyn College in New York and a Ph.D. in mass communication from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

In Memoriam: James Solomon, Jr., 1930-2024

While teaching at Morris College, an HBCU in South Carolina, Solomon enrolled in the graduate program in mathematics at the University of South Carolina, making him one of the institution's first three Black students.

Street Named to Honor the First Black Football Player at the University of Memphis

Rogers walked-on to the football team at what was then Memphis State University in 1968, making him the institution's first Black football player. After graduating in 1972, he spent the next four decades as a coach and administrator with Memphis-area schools.

In Memoriam: Clyde Aveilhe, 1937-2024

Dr. Aveilhe held various student affairs and governmental affairs positions with Howard University, California State University, and the City University of New York.
