West Virginia University has announced four finalists for the position of dean of libraries. The candidates will all be visiting the Morgantown campus this week for interviews and public forums. Two of the four finalists are African Americans.
Jon E. Cawthorne is the associate dean for public services and assessment at Florida State University Libraries. He has previously served as associate university librarian for public services at Boston College and dean of the San Diego State University Library.
Cawthorne is a graduate of Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and holds a master of library science degree from the University of Maryland at College Park. He is completing work on his doctoral degree.
Janice Welburn is dean of University Libraries at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has held this post since 2006. Previously, she was the associate dean of libraries at the University of Arizona.
Welburn is a graduate of Bishop College in Dallas, Texas, an institution which closed in 1988. She holds a master’s degree in American history and a master’s degree in library and information science from what is now Clark Atlanta University.
Update: Cawthorne was selected as the next dean on February 7, 2014 and will begin his new job on March 17.
