Here is this week’s news of grants to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.
The University of Arkansas, Little Rock received a grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to fund the Charles W. Donaldson Summer Bridge Academy, a program aimed at improving retention and graduation rates of students from underrepresented minority groups.
Historically Black Alabama State University in Montgomery received a $84,325 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense for programs in cancer research and bone tissue engineering.
Florida International University in Miami received a $1 million donation from Jennifer Adger and Gerald C. Grant Jr. that will establish an endowment fund for scholarships for students in business programs. Grant, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the university, is branch director of financial planning for AXA Advisors in Miami. According to the university, the donation is the largest ever made by an African American graduate of the university.
