Benjamin F. Ward, a long-time professor of philosophy at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, died at the Duke University Hospital earlier this month. He was 65 years old. Professor Ward had been diagnosed with colon cancer three years ago.
Dr. Ward was a native of Baltimore but grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and Berkeley, California. He was a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta and held a Ph.D. from Yale University.
After teaching at Yale for seven years, Dr. Ward joined the Duke faculty in 1980. In addition to philosophy, he taught courses in German studies, Arabic, and comparative literature. He also chaired the Faculty Scholar Committee and was associate dean for faculty programs. Dr. Ward was a member of the board of visitors of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem.
