The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has granted approval to historically Black North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro to increase the number of students its admits from outside the state of North Carolina. The university had asked to increase the allowable percentage of out-of-state students from 18 percent to 25 percent.
Enrolling more out-of-state students can help state universities financially. Tuition at North Carolina A&T State University for students from outside of North Carolina is about triple that paid by in-state students.
Harold L. Martin, chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University, stated that the university can increase the number of out-of-state students without having a negative impact on in-state students. He assured the board that no qualified in-state student would be denied admission to accommodate students from outside North Carolina.
Dr. Martin said, “We will continue to increase the university’s academic competitiveness and prepare more students for careers in high-need disciplines locally, regionally, and nationally.”
