Honors for Four Black Scholars

Washington_Tiffany-30457-010Tiffany Washington, an assistant professor of social work at the University of Georgia, received the 2014 Student Award for Social Work Research from the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work. Dr. Washington was honored for being the lead author of “Fidelity Decision-Making in Social and Behavioral Research: Alternative Measures of Dose and Other Considerations.” The paper, which will be published in the journal Social Work Research, was written while Dr. Washington was completing her doctoral work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

KARIN_EDWARDSKarin Edwards, dean of student services at Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, Connecticut, received the 2014 Scott Goodnight Award from NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

Dean Edwards holds a doctorate from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.

sheppard_ericEric Sheppard, dean of the School of Engineering and Technology at Hampton University in Virginia, was honored by being named an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Dr. Sheppard is a graduate of Boston University. He holds a master’s degree and a scientific doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

alukoOluwatoni Aluko, a second-year medical student at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, is the inaugural winner of the Ripple Effect Contest Award from Heart to Heart International and Welch Allyn Inc. Medical students were asked to use social media skills to demonstrate how they will “create their own ripple effect of good in their communities or around the world.” As a result of the award, Aluko will travel to Haiti this spring and work alongside healthcare workers in Port-au-Prince.

Aluko, a native of Burtonsville, Maryland, is a graduate of the University of Maryland-College Park. Her winning entry can be viewed below.
