University of Maryland Eastern Shore Puts a New Face on an Existing Program

umes_logo1The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is repositioning its hotel and restaurant management program to broaden its focus. The program will now be known as hospitality and tourism management. University officials determined that the old name suggested a far more limited career scope than was actually the case considering the department’s curriculum.

bogerErnest P. Boger II, department chair, stated, “The change reflects what we actually do, what we program students for. The great majority of our courses apply to the broader industry and career areas of hospitality and tourism.”

Dr. Boger was the first African American graduate of the University of South Florida in Tampa. He earned a master’s degree from the University of North Texas and a doctorate in management from Revans University.

The university hopes to further broaden the hospitality and tourism curriculum to prepare students for careers in Maryland’s blossoming gaming industry. Development of a master’s degree program in hospitality and tourism management is in the planning stages.
