African American Ole Miss Student Is a Victim of a Race-Related Attack

oleMissLogoA Black senior at the University of Mississippi says that she was attacked as she returned to a housing complex about a mile from campus that is populated almost entirely by Ole Miss students. The woman says she was doused with an alcoholic beverage by a group of men in a truck yelling racial slurs. One of the occupants of the truck allegedly called her a “Black nigger” during the incident.

The woman reported that the racial climate at the housing complex has been hostile. She said that earlier a young White man walked by her and a group of friends, spit on the ground, and said, “You can’t live here, you’re Black.”

  1. It is shocking to hear that such blatantly racist things like this still happen. I hope you keep us informed about how the university responds to this.

  2. I would like to say that I am shocked by this, but I am not. It is Ole Miss. People go there because of the Heritage. Unfortunately, some get caught up in the covert racism and begin to express it overtly in ways like this. Having been there before, I can say that it is unfortunate but something not out of place there.

  3. That saddens me so much at a time when the University is advocating a move toward acceptance and inclusiveness. If we cannot be educated beyond these ills of the past in “higher” education, then how, where, and when will it happen?

  4. This is just so disturbing, but a couple questions immediately enter into my head.
    1. Why would anyone regardless of race want to go to school in a state like Mississippi?
    2. Has the issue been fixed? What are the local or school police doing about this, if anything?
    3. How often does this happen?
    4. What can other Americans do to stop this type of behavior?

  5. Is there any evidence to substantiate her claims? How easy it must be to take her story at face value. More accusations of this type are proven to be false than true.
