Gilda Barabino, associate chair for graduate studies and professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, was elected president of the Biomedical Engineering Society at the group’s annual meeting in Hartford, Connecticut. Professor Barabino is the first African American and the second woman to serve as president of the society.
Dr. Barabino has been on the faculty at Georgia Tech since 2007. Previously, she taught at Northeastern University in Boston for 18 years. There, she also served as vice provost for undergraduate education.
Dr. Barabino is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana and holds a Ph.D. from Rice University.
