The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has announced that is changing the name of its Black studies program. The Black Studies program was founded in 1982 and its name was later changed to African American Studies. Beginning on August 1, the program will have the new title of African American and African Diaspora Studies.
Tara T. Green, the director of the program, stated, “the name African American Studies did not accurately reflect the program’s evolving core curriculum, which now includes courses that do not specifically focus on the African presence in the United States.”
Professor Green received her bachelor’s degree in English from Dillard University in New Orleans. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English, with an emphasis in African American literature from Louisiana State University.
