The University of Memphis has announced the establishment of the African and African American Institute.

Six teachers from local public schools will accompany 16 students from the University of Memphis for a two-week study abroad program in Ghana. The group will attend lectures, visit schools and other sites, and participate in service learning activities. The group will then develop the curriculum for a two-week summer program for local high school students on the University of Memphis campus.

w_Beverly_CrossBeverly Cross, co-director of the Institute and holder of the Lillian and Morrie Moss Chair in Urban Education at the University of Memphis, stated, “Students and faculty and several school teachers will travel to Ghana to study abroad and will then return to teach area high school students about the history, arts and literature connecting their lives to Africa. The African and African-American Institute is guided by the African proverb, ‘Those who learn must teach.'”
