The Greenest Historically Black Colleges and Universities

BGIlogoThe Building Green Initiative on the campus of Clark Atlanta University has ranked the nation’s most eco-friendly historically Black colleges and universities. The rankings were determined by responses to surveys on energy efficiency, green buildings, recycling efforts, renewable energy generation, student programs, food services, campus transportation, and other matters.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was ranked first among state-operated HBCUs, in part due to its 17-acre solar energy farm. Other public HBCUs ranking high in the survey were Florida A&M University, Elizabeth City State University, and North Carolina A&T State University.

Among private HBCUs, Spelman College in Atlanta was ranked as the most eco-friendly. Also ranking high were Howard University, Morehouse College, and Livingstone College. Claflin University and Clark Atlanta University tied for fifth place on the list of eco-friendly private HBCUs.
