Alabama State University has announced that its master of science degree program in prosthetics and orthotics has earned full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. It is the only university in Alabama, the only historically Black college or university, and one of only 13 universities nationwide to offer a master’s degree program in the field.
Three students entered the program in 2012 and they will earn their master’s degrees this spring. The students will then undertake a 12-to-18 month residency program before taking examinations that will allow them to become certified practitioners in prosthetics and orthotics.
The announcement of full accreditation has produced a doubling of applications to the master’s degree program.
