Two African American Women Announce Their Retirements

Charlotte Pierce-Baker was named professor of women’s and gender studies emerita and professor of English emerita at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt, she taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Duke University. She is the author of Surviving the Silence:  Black Women’s Stories of Rape (W.W. Norton, 1998).

Dr. Pierce-Baker is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. She holds a master’s degree from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in speech pathology and applied linguistics from Temple University in Philadelphia.

lelia_crawfordLelia Crawford, the director of International Student and Scholar Services at Emory University in Atlanta, has announced that she will retire in August. She has been on the staff at the university for the past 35 years.

In addition to her current position, she has served as assistant dean for campus life and was the founding director of the Office of Minority Student Programs.
