Hampton University Professor Wins National Award for the Teaching of Science

fowlksEdison R. Fowlks, professor of biology and director of the Biotechnology Laboratory at Hampton University in Virginia, has been selected to receive the 2014 Bruce Alberts Award for Excellence in Science Education from the American Society of Cell Biology. Professor Fowlks will be presented with the award at the society’s annual meeting in Philadelphia this December.

Dr. Fowlks is being honored for his dedication to giving hands-on experiences to his students. “I believe that we should use the class venue to teach research,” says Professor Fowlks. “Most schools weren’t doing that when I began teaching. It’s important that students learn how to contribute to the body of scientific information. We have to teach them how to think critically, how to study and how to learn.”

Dr. Fowlks holds a Ph.D. in plant pathology from Ohio State University.
