Gwendolyn E. Boyd, president of Alabama State University in Montgomery, has signed an agreement with the National Park Service to develop a new $5 million interpretive center on campus that will be part of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. Two other interpretive centers have been constructed.
The agreement calls for the university to build the center with federal grants for architectural work and construction. Another $3 million will be earmarked for exhibits that will be developed by the National Park Service. The center will be built at the front of the Alabama State University stadium, near the one-time home of civil rights leader Ralph David Abernathy. Groundbreaking for the center will take place in September and construction is expected to take 18 months to complete.
President Boyd stated, ““We pledge today to all those souls who took part in this great campaign for freedom (that) Montgomery’s Interpretive Center will be a living, breathing, speaking, organic structure which will touch many lives with its buoyant story.”
Congratulations to President Boyd on this noteworthy achievement so early in her career as President of Alabama State University!
